Project location:

Ciudad Victoria and Llera de Canales, Tamaulipas

Electric power can change the life of an entire community, especially in education. When power is not available, many classes are interrupted due to the lack of light which affects the performance of students.

This problem is reflected in school dropouts and access to education. That is why we decided to start a rural electrification project for a rural school in a community near our wind farm Mesa La Paz.

We partnered with Vestas, 500RPM and Universidad Politécnica de Victoria, to train college students in the design, construction and maintenance of a low-power wind turbine that was donated to the rural school.

Wind energy, did not only solved the problem of lack of electric energy, but it also meant having a safe, reliable and clean energy source. The solution also included an energy storage system. When the wind isn't blowing but more energy is needed, the batteries will kick-in and supply power to the school.

In addition to bringing electricity to this rural school, we also provided educational talks about sustainable energy and responsible use of resources. These educational workshops complement the project. Now, the school has both electricity and education and awareness about the sustainability of resources.

Impact:

Now, over 100 students from a rural school in Las Compuertas are being taught in an improved school setting and learning about clean energy. 30 college students and 5 teachers have learned how to build and maintain a small-scale windmill.
